Abscess

The perirectal abscess (or boil) is a cause of sudden (acute) pain and usually also causes swelling. (Fig.1)

Abscess is caused by an infection of small glands located around the rectum (perianal glands). The pain and swelling will continue until the boil comes to a head and drains its pus. Ideally, this would happen at the hands of a surgeon who cuts into the boil under local anesthesia. (Fig.2)

An abscess, if untreated, may also progress to a life-threatening infection and death, especially in people susceptible to infection, such as diabetics or people on steroid medication. Therefore it is recommended that medical care( surgical incision under local anesthesia) for an abscess be sought immediately.
